GUIDE / LED BEAUTY MASKS

RED.

NEAR IR.

A straightforward guide to the light colours you see on LED face mask boxes, and why the number alone isn't enough.

NOIR black contoured mask

What does nm mean on an LED face mask?

Nanometres (nm) describe the light's wavelength. Visible red, blue and near-infrared occupy different parts of the light spectrum. Compare wavelengths alongside the mask's format, session length and controls.

Red, blue and near-infrared are not interchangeable

Visible red and blue wavelengths are distinct parts of the light spectrum. Near-infrared sits beyond the visible red range. Some LED masks combine more than one type of emitter, but there is no simple rule that 'more wavelengths' automatically means a better product.

Why optical output matters more than a big LED number

When comparing light specifications, consider irradiance (mW/cm²), energy per session (J/cm²), distribution, session length and the supplied instructions. Fit, controls and comfort also help determine which format suits your routine.

Does this prove visible skin improvement?

Wavelength is one product specification. Compare the mask's format, fit, controls, charging and supplied instructions alongside the light specifications.

Practical buying checklist

  • Wavelengths and measured optical output for that same model
  • Electrical, photobiological and eye safety reports
  • Clear instructions, contraindications and usable controls
